Player’s Handbook Update

I’m working on an update to the Player’s Handbook, the rules in it are according to the first edition of The Artifact RPG and don’t include things like Barrier Points in the Comm Officer’s Guide section. There are also some formatting issues that need to be fixed.

The Comm Officer’s Guide is going to get the most attention. A lot of the ideas for the CO I am told were far too technical. There are also some new technologies that will be discussed in it. I’m trying to make it’s format more along the lines of the Engineer’s Sourcebook where each task is explained and what skills are needed to perform them.

I ordered a test book, there are a few adjustments that need to be made before I publish it.

Tortuga – Game Setting

An example of a Titan

We are working on a sourcebook with a production name of Tortuga to give civilian and corporate characters more options. It will include what was originally going to be the Titans source book along with a lot more treasure hunting ideas. The goal here is to flesh out some ideas that are in the game book and things that are slated for future sourcebooks with more of a backstory that can be explored by the Scimrahn Civilian, Colonists or Corporate characters before the meta story is completed.

Other ideas are to include more high tech equipment from Earth that advanced characters will be looking for. Tortuga has been rolling along slowly but already the ideas that are going into it are changing our games.

We weren’t sure for a while if the title “Tortuga” was going to stick as the finished title of the book. The sourcebook is going to include a setting for Corporate characters to operate out of with a code name of Tortuga. There are a few other minor settings that I’ve already written, and those will stay, but the focus is going to be this main base of operation.

Other than this main setting, I need to work on more equipment and pictures. I’m also looking at some new core rules because some of the native tech in this book is a flavor of where the rest of the game is going.

Report regarding”strange behavior”of native Fauna on the Artifact.

…”In a strange twist of events immediately following the attack of the 236 recon platoon, with which we are imbedded, by these so called “Chesbah hounds”, many of us were shocked to see the behavior that followed. It seemed despite the loss of nearly 20 of their numbers, the surviving hounds seemed completely overcome by curiosity! We were even able to capture images of such strange behavior… well take for example; one private found an injured hound trying to unlock the combination lock on his trunk. What’s stranger still is that the trunk had already been broken open. We found another seemingly uninjured creature opening and closing the door on one of the transports, utterly terrifying the driver of the vehicle for more than an hour.It truly seems that just what we do encounter is just as alien to us as we are to them…”Kirt Axelburg, AP(Associated Press)

Mr. Abraham

Mr. AbrahamIt is my sad duty to inform you that your son passed away June 23 2086. He was murdered by Kelrath forces. His bodyguard failed to protect him and we are investigating the situation. The bodyguard, Mr O’Riley claims that they were ambushed and he was unable to save your son, he was able to save himself. ASO troops have taken him into custody and he is being transported to Gadios where he can be interrogated by civilian authorities. You have my condolences sir. We will do everything we can to ensure that justice is done for your son.Maximilian Larson

Observation of Chezbah Fortress

Report by: Lieutenant Allen Hughes

Position: 75th Platoon Commander

Assigned Objective: Observation of Chezbah Fortress

Purpose of Mission: Determine the purpose of and technology in use in the structure designated “Chezbah Fortress”.

Progress Report: The Fortress appears to use a technology similar to the “Dark Tiles” commonly used by the Scimrahn. Our Scientist speculates that the Chezbah must understand how the tiles work and have either augmented their effect or have been able to replicate it. We have observed an estimated 400 metric tons of materials delivered to the “doorway” of the facility. This would point to the interior dimension being far larger than the one generated by Dark Tiles. Also the ability to open a aperture between dimensions is something never before seen with Dark Tiles. From what we have been able to observe, there is some kind of structure inside. We have taken some video of it and will return along with it. Without a forcible entry there is no way to observe more from the outside.

Status report on the titan

Report by: Lieutenant Gary MacDonald

Position: 139th Platoon Commander

Assigned Objective: Status report on the titan

The titan is still moving in a random pattern and stopping periodically. It’s general course may bring it in contact with the Chezbah town of Hef-elek-meser. There have been two brief encounters with Hunter E-Suits that attacked the titan but we were not able to do any damage from what we can tell. The titan destroyed the E-Suits once with some kind of energy blast and once by crushing it.We have kept our distance as it appears hostile to anything it encounters. Our engineers estimate that it’s mass is in the area of half of a million Kilograms from the ground impressions it has made and their displacement. We will continue to observe the titan and keep you informed.

Delivery of vaccines to Kelrath

Report by: Master Sergeant Alex Rodriguez

Position: Medical Officer

Assigned Objective: Delivery of vaccines to Kelrath

Purpose of Mission: To offer medicine in order to reduce the danger of a deadly outbreak among the Kelrath population of the city of Gerit.

Progress Report: Our mission met with extreme difficulty just trying to inform the Kelrath of our intention. We did anticipate this so a bunker and defensive positions were established to allow us to weather attacks. Special Vangard helicopters were prepared to launch leaflets on the fighting forces of the Kelrath. This had limited effect since we weren’t sure if the combat forces were literate in their own language.A secondary attempt was made with a remote controlled vehicle that was outfitted with loudspeakers. One of our Communications Officers has Kelrath language training and recorded a message that would be looped continuously. This attempt also had limited effectiveness because the Kelrath assumed that the vehicle was some kind of weapon and destroyed it.Of course we were constantly transmitting a message over radio but very few of the Kelrath are equipped with radio. There also seemed to be several Kelrath fighting vehicles that were jamming our transmissions. We were ultimately unsuccessful because we were unable to make contact with the Kelrath general population. The hope was to get the Kelrath combatants interested in the medical assistance we were offering. In the future it is my recommendation that contact should be made that will not result in a military response and then bring in the medical personnel.

Hello Mr and Ms Flores,

Hello Mr and Ms Flores,I’m afraid I have the one to be the bearer of bad news. Your son was sent on a mission to protect a certain Scimrahn Tribe. On December 30th, at precisely 16:43 we lost contact with the platoon your son was in. For the next 8 hours transmissions were sent with no response. At precisely 2:21 rescue’s teams were scrambled to their last known position. They found nothing. After more extensive searching, the platoon’s bodies were found… We suspect that an ambush of at least fifty to a hundred “Chezbah hounds” attacked, very deadly beasts, we deal with them quite a bit, and we have indeed lost a lot of men to them. There… I’m afraid there’s not much of the corpse we can salvage. The Artifact Study Organization, shall pay for all of the funeral needs. I give you my deepest condolences for your son’s loss, please remember, its a risk every man takes, when stepping in to this… “New Eden”.-We all due respect, Jim Packer

Dear Mom and Dad

Dear Mom and Dad,

Sorry I haven’t written in a few months. I’m doing fine. My company was sent to defend a Scimrahn village, the Enepid tribe, that was making combat E-Suits for us. We were attacked by a small Chezbah force. The Scimrahn said they had to leave, the Chezbah would be back, so they packed up and headed out. We teleported back to base.

Mom, I met a girl, her name is Neah. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to see her again because she was from the Scimrahn village. Neah said she couldn’t tell me where she was going because it would put us in danger. The Chezbah would try to get us to tell them where they went, so the Scimrahn never say where they are going. I wanted to have her teleport out with us but the Lieutenant wouldn’t allow it so she told me that she would meet me in three months at Gadios. At least I think she did, I’ve learned a little of how to speak their language but it’s not easy.

I’ll try to write more often.

Love,

Eric.
